ubuntu on a Dell

So, I’m considering building a NAS+DLNA Server. It just seems to make better sense than buying a pre-built NAS box. Anyway, I don’t know when I will actually begin work on it.

In the meantime though, I wanted to install ubuntu on my Dell Inspiron and test DLNA and also play right out to HDMI from ubuntu. I haven’t done any Linux installs for a few years now. Ubuntu is such a breeze to install. I remember the tideousness of Linux installs in years of yore.

Everything installed fine and ubuntu booted fine. I could dual-boot into my Windows 7 as well. However, once I shutdown Windows and rebooted the laptop, grub2 went missing and all I got on screen was a “no module found” error.

After a bit of search, I found that Dell’s Data Safe has the funny habit of overwriting the MBR and corrupting it. So I had to recover grub2, boot into Windows 7 and uninstall Dell DataSafe. Of course, this session corrupted the MBR as well and I had to recover grub2 yet again.

Everything looks ok now. Phew!
